When the Chinese developed papermaking 2,000 years ago, the finished product was used only for sacred texts. Today we're inundated with paper in all forms, most of which winds up in the trash. Making paper at home is a creative way to reuse some of this excess. You will learn how to make pulp, make a paper making mold, color and size the pulp, and decorate, press and dry the sheet. The finished paper can be used to make your own greeting cards or in scrap booking. We'll also explore three-dimensional forms. All of this can be accomplished by using simple household equipment and tools. Be prepared to have fun!
Students bring: 1 or 2 small to medium size buckets, rubber kitchen style gloves, sponge, newspaper and wax paper for taking home damp paper sheets. Optional items: apron to help keep you clean and dry, dryer lint divided into light and dark colors, shredded junk mail (No newsprint or glossy paper. Remove all plastic and foil pieces), scrap colored paper pieces, old sewing patterns, any scrap paper, small amounts of yarn or ribbon, tiny beads, dried flowers or grasses, netting, lace, burlap, hardware cloth for texturizing, small plastic or wooden bowl for casting 3 dimensional forms, large strainer, scissors, embroidery hoops to use as papermaking frames.
